Life After Bladder Cancer: Miroslav’s Story

Bladder cancer treatment is planned according to the stage, grade and location of the tumour, whether the disease is non-muscle-invasive or muscle-invasive, and the patient’s overall health and kidney function. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include transurethral resection of the bladder tumour (TURBT), intravesical therapy, bladder-preserving treatment, partial or radical cystectomy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy or a combination of these.

For patients who need the bladder removed, urinary diversion or reconstruction becomes an important part of treatment and long-term recovery. Regular follow-up with cystoscopy, imaging and other examinations monitors the response to treatment and watches for recurrence.
