Turkey sits outside the European health-card system, tourist medicine is private, and a single night in intensive care can cost more than the whole holiday. Travel insurance for Turkey is not a formality — it is the part of the trip that pays for every other part if something goes wrong. Here is what the medical side of a policy should actually contain.
First fact: GHIC and EHIC do not work in Turkey
UK and EU health cards cover state care inside the EU scheme — and Turkey is not in it. Every visit to a doctor, clinic or hospital is billed privately. If your plan was “I have my health card,” read our GHIC & EHIC in Turkey guide and then buy a policy.
The medical cover checklist
- Emergency medical expenses: at least £/€/$1 million equivalent; serious policies offer 5–10 million.
- Repatriation — an air ambulance home can exceed the cost of the treatment itself.
- Emergency dental and prescription cover.
- 24/7 assistance line that can guarantee payment to a hospital directly — this is what gets you admitted without a deposit.
- Activities you will actually do: quad bikes, hot-air balloons, diving and even scooter rental are excluded by default on many policies.
- Alcohol clauses — claims can be refused if intoxication contributed.
Pre-existing conditions: declare, always
The most common reason Turkey claims fail is an undeclared condition — the insurer finds the history in the hospital paperwork and voids the medical section. Declaring adds a premium but keeps the contract honest. If you have a cancer history, our travel insurance after cancer guide covers the specialist route.
Planned treatment is a different product
Standard travel insurance NEVER covers treatment you traveled to receive — surgery, dental work, hair transplants, IVF. It may also exclude complications of that treatment. If you are coming to Turkey as a patient, you need: the hospital’s own package terms, optional specialist medical-travel insurance for complications, and ordinary travel insurance for everything unrelated (lost bags, a twisted ankle in the bazaar). Our treatment quote guide shows what the hospital side already includes.
How a real claim works in Turkey
- For emergencies call 112; for anything admitting you to hospital, call the insurer’s assistance line the same day — numbers are on the policy certificate.
- The assistance company issues a guarantee of payment to the hospital, or instructs you to pay and claim back.
- Keep everything: invoices, prescriptions, discharge summary, even taxi receipts to the clinic — see our invoices and receipts guide.
- Claims are settled against documents, not stories; a phone photo of every paper before you fly home is the cheapest insurance of all.
What Turkey trips actually claim for
Assistance companies report the same pattern every season: stomach infections, falls, scooter and quad accidents, dental emergencies, and heart events in older travelers. None are exotic; all are expensive without cover. A typical comprehensive policy for a week in Turkey costs less than an airport transfer — the asymmetry is the whole argument.

4 in totalFrequently asked questions
Is travel insurance mandatory for Turkey?
Not for most tourist entries — some visa categories and long stays require it. It is functionally mandatory the moment you need a doctor, because there is no free state safety net for visitors.
Does my bank card or credit card cover me?
Some premium cards include real travel insurance; many include only baggage or cancellation. Read the medical section and the per-incident limits before relying on it.
Can I buy a policy after arriving in Turkey?
A few insurers sell post-departure policies, usually with waiting periods and reduced cover. Buying before departure is cheaper and removes the argument about when a condition started.
Will insurance cover a check-up or planned scan?
No — planned care is excluded by definition. Ask the hospital for a fixed quote instead; see our check-up packages for how screening is priced.
